Jem and the Holograms TV Model
Home/Change Series
Jem is an American animated television series that ran from 1985 to 1988 in U.S. The show's focusin on a singer named Jem, her band the Holograms and their adventures. The series was a joint collaboration between Hasbro and Sunbow Productions, the same team responsible for GI Joe and Transformers, and was intended to target female viewers. The creator of the series was Christy Marx, who also had been a staff writer for the aforementioned programs.
Despite the fact that the show was originally designed by Hasbro for the purpose of marketing a line of dolls, it employed several interweaving storylines and a complex backstory — both unusual in an animated television series during the 1980s.
Jem Fashion Cels are hand painted cels used in the actual production of the series. The term cel means it is acetate. The black line is xeroxed onto the plastic, and the color is applied to the back. The Fashion cels are the size of a standard 8.5 X 11" piece of paper with three punches down the left side for storing in a binder. It is a Fashion Cel, ie: a costume used by one of the characters in the series. For example, the designation P-13 would mean that it is Pizzazz (P) in the 13th costume designed for her in the series. The episode numbers are always 5205 followed by a 2 digit number. 5205 is the series number assigned Jem at Marvel. The two digit number following that is an episode number. So a fashion with number 5205-05 had its first use in episode 05 of Jem and the Holograms. Usually a fashion cel has a piece of paper which is stuck to its back. Since these were originally stored in a large 3-hole binder and the cel paint sticks to acetate, the cels had to be separated with papers, otherwise, they would have all fused into a block. Jem ceased production over 25 years ago, meaning these archival materials have survived over a quarter of a century.
