Berserk is set in a medieval Europe, the story centers on the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the Band of the Hawk. Themes of good or evil pervade the story, as it explores both the best and worst of human nature
Hawks play a pivotal role in ending the long war that has ravaged the country of Midland and are renowned as heroes. Griffith ended up being imprisoned for sleeping with the princess and is tortured for a year until he is rescued by his comrades. But by then, Griffith's body is horribly mutilated as he rendered a mute and immobile cripple before he accidentally summoned the archdemons known as the God Hand. Griffith sacrificed his soldiers to the God Hand's apostles so that he can become a member of the God Hand and fulfill his desire. While Guts and his lover Casca escaped with the aid of the mysterious Skull Knight, the former lost his left forearm and right eye, while the latter lost her mind from the hellish ordeal along with her unborn child.
The Egg or the Beherit, is one of several small, oval objects of unknown origin. resembling an egg with a set of human facial features scattered randomly across its surface.. The Crimson Behelit is connected to the God Hand, The purpose of the Behelits is to create an Interstice (the Interstice, creatures of dream are alive, elves, elemental s, witches and wizards). The Interstice is where one can find the Mansion of the Spirit Tree and the nightmare realm of the Qliphoth. Guts and Casca, due to their status as branded survivors, also have to exist in the Interstice. As stated by himself, Skull Knight is also able to exist in the Interstice.) between the physical realm and the part of the Astral Realm where the God Hand reside.
A Behelit belongs to a predestined owner and will always finds its way to its owner when his desire to escape his current situation is great enough for it to fully activate so the owner can be transformed into an Apostle, demonic monster that was originally human.
